  • Is this a harlequin ladybird?

    Is this a harlequin ladybird?
  • Help to Identity this bug please.

I found hundreds of these woodlice looking things covering my flowering crab apple tree and it is starting to look a bit tired, could these be the culprit and does anybody know what they are?

I've never seen them before, they are about 5mm max and look like woodlice but are more rounded. They look a bit  like limpets as they have pulled there bodies tight to the branch shape and don’t move much.

    Thank you

    Andy

  • What is this preying mantis doing?

I was doing some homework outside when I moved a book on the table to find this preying mantis happily going about it's business!

Is she laying eggs? (assuming she is indeed a she) Where do they normally lay their eggs?

Also, once she has finished, would it damage the eggs (or whatever the grey stuff turns out to be) to move them on to a tree/ leaf? As my parents rather not have preying mantis babies, as cool as they are, swarming all over the table!

I'm in New Zealand...are preying mantises actually found in the UK?

    Thanks

  • What is this spider?

We have lots of these black spiders in our roof garden.  They are all different sizes, so we assume they are different ages.  Can anyone tell us what they are?

  • ID for insects by pond

I was by a pond today and I saw maybe a dozen of these insects lounging on flag iris leaves. They've got two pairs of wings, very oblong heads (with compound eyes and 3 ocelli). They're basically black, about 1cm long, and with membranous see-through wings with dark veins. Under a microscope they're covered with tiny tiny hairs, apart from the bit just behind their head which is shiny and kind of bulbous with two v-shaped dents. The one I've been looking at doesn't seem to have much interest in flying. I figured to begin with that it might be a sort of caddisfly (but they seem to have much longer antennae than these?) or maybe an alderfly - Sialis? but then photos I've seen of those seem to have a big 'collar', which mine hasn't got.

Apologies for the appalling photo. And thank you for any help!

  • Hi. Can anyone tell me what these are?

We are trying to track source of skin irritant, children seem to be  being bitten by mysterious invisible insects, possibly. Could any of  these be the culprit?

  • non orb webs

Does anyone know where I can find some good information on non-orb spider webs? I'm an artist working on a largescale architectural piece based on something similar to Labyrinth spider webs, but looking for more detail - like how do they make them? Where do they start and is there an order to the weaving? Ideally I'm looking for video fottage of a funnelweb being built from scatch if one exists. Or is there a reasearch institute with specialists in this field?
  • What is this bug I found?

Still looking for what is biting my family! Using some gluetape, I am pretty sure the bug below came off my skin (not 100% sure, it could have been stuck to the tape already.) The size of it is perhaps 1 millimetre, or maybe slightly less. Here it is:

    any help appreciated.
